Get OHNE it! TJK Organics Supports Non-Toxic Tampons

We love it when we find a brand that reflects the Tabitha James Kraan Organics values, which at it’s core is all about loving yourself, loving your fellow human and loving your planet. So when Tabitha recently met the two owners of OHNE – a company revolutionising the menstrual hygiene industry with their awesome organic cotton tampons – she knew that we had to put them in the spotlight on our blog and spread the word about their fantastic work.

Not only are co-founders Leah and Nikki calling out some of the biggest and baddest toxic tampon brands for their unregulated and undisclosed use of chemicals in their products, but they are also highlighting incredibly important feminist issues with their Twitter campaign #myvaginasaysno and supporting young women in rural Africa with 5% of OHNE revenue, for improved menstrual health and period management where the world needs it most.

We’re crushing pretty hard on these awesome ladies and their inspirational mission and we’re pretty sure, by the end of the exclusive interview below, you will be too. Oh, did we mention that your monthly supply (delivered directly to your front door), costs just £6.80? Get buying, get supporting, get sharing!

Who is ‘OHNE’? What’s your brand all about?

When we were developing OHNE pre-launch, we knew we want to create a diverse, all encompassing community, that encouraged the conversation around every aspect of menstrual and reproductive health. A lot of the issues we face in regards to our menstrual health can be linked back to the fact that we just don’t talk about periods enough – so that’s what we’re trying to do. We’re encouraging women and people who have periods to feel like they can challenge the boundaries of what is acceptable – and that they can do this in a space without judgement! Since launching, one of our top priorities has been building a community centred around our mission and the women and people who have periods that we make tampons for.

What inspired you to launch a non-toxic tampon range?

When the idea was first born we were pretty horrified by the lack of regulation when it came to menstrual products. There are actually stricter regulations for the labelling of hamster food than there are for tampons in the UK (and Europe). If you think about it – have you ever seen an ingredients list on a packet of tampons? Well, unfortunately that’s because the lists make for a pretty disturbing read, containing chemicals such as: rayon, polyester, viscose, chlorine, bleach, traces of dioxin, cyanazine, dicofol, naled, propargite, and trifluralin. And…if you choose a brand with odour neutralisation it gets worse: artificial colours, adhesives, polyethylene, polypropylene and propylene glycol. Basically a chemical soup with contaminants linked to hormonal disruption, cancer, birth defects, dryness and infertility.
When all of this comes into close contact with the skin of the vulva – the most absorbent skin in the body – it moves straight into the bloodstream, making its toxic way directly to our delicate organs. So that’s why we decided to only launch an organic range, because we think that those toxic ingredients have no business going inside your vagina.

What is a OHNE tampon made out of? What makes it so different?

Unlike the mainstream tampon brands, OHNE tampons do not contain synthetic fibres, chemical additives, fragrance, dyes, chlorine bleach, residues of pesticides or herbicides. They also have superior leak protection, they’re hypoallergenic, unscented and biodegradable.
We’re also really working to make our packing as eco-friendly as possible so we use minimal packaging and all the tampon wrappings, boxes, and shipping bags are recyclable and/or biodegradable.

Why is it important to use certified organic cotton tampons?

A huge part of launching OHNE was creating an ethical and socially responsible business. Organic is a lot more in demand today than it ever has been, which is great because people are becoming more and more aware of the types of products they are consuming. What’s not so great is that a lot of brands are using the word organic when their products might not be made of 100% organic materials.
We’re really proud to say that, to date, we are the only organic tampon delivery service in the UK to have been certified by both the Soil Association and GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard). It was important to us that we didn’t just slap the word organic on our product – we want to be accountable to our customers, so that they can feel 100% safe and happy with the products they’re putting in their vagina.

It’s not just us who can benefit from buying your tampons, you’re also working with School Club Zambia to empower young women. Tell us about that…

A huge part of the OHNE mission is supporting menstrual health on a global scale, with the fight against period poverty playing a central role in this. So we’ve partnered with School Club Zambia, whose Girl’s Programme was set up to improve the lives and education of young girls living in rural Zambia. Rather than donating single-use, disposable period products, for every box of OHNE tampons bought, customers are directly contributing to long-term change in rural schools. The School Club Zambia are building brand new, clean toilet blocks in every school they work with, educating the students about menstruation, and equipping the girls with the skills they need to make their own reusable, sustainable sanitary pads from local resources. We’re really passionate about this aspect of our business as The School Club Zambia is an organisation that Nikki has personally worked with in Zambia. Being able to support the community in an authentic way means a huge amount to us. We believe that every woman has the right to manage her period without shame and with dignity, which is why we’re committed to supporting efforts to eradicate period poverty in low-income areas.

Your products aren’t available in high street stores, so how can we get our monthly supply?

Easy! You can log onto our website and create your bespoke box – and we deliver through your letterbox. All you need to do is tell us what type of tampons you would like, how often you’d like them, and we’ll make sure your products get to you in time for your period, every period. We know that periods aren’t always regular and predictable so you can also pause and edit your subscription at any time!
