What are the Key Benefits?
Sea Buckthorn is a herb grown commercially across the world. The leaves, fruit and flowers can be used to make holistic medicines. Derived from a small, nutrient-rich, yellow or orange berry. The oil can also be derived from the small black seeds.
Believed to have derived from the Himalayas humans have been utilising the healing powers of Sea Buckthorn for at least 12 centuries. The Tibetan medical manual, the Rgyud bzi (“The Four Tantras”), believed to be from the Tang Dynasty (618-907 AD), lists 84 prescriptions for the preparation of Sea Buckthorn for medicinal purposes. The ancient Greeks named the plant Hippophaë or “glittering horse” as its leaves were part of the diet for race horses. They also believed that horses became fitter and healthier when maintained on pastures with these plants. According to legend, Sea Buckthorn leaves were one of the preferred foods of the Pegasus (flying horse). The plant was also widely used as a holistic medicine in the Roman Empire, Mongolia and Russia.
Ghenghis Khan, the founder of the Mongol Empire in the 13th Century, relied on three treasures: a fit & well organised army, strict discipline and Sea Buckthorn (the nutritional trick up his sleeve). It was believed that the oil made Ghenghis Khan’s soldiers stronger and much more agile than those of his enemies.
However, it is only in recent years that people have had a better understanding of Sea Buckthorn.
