The Lemon tree is thought to have originated in India, then was introduced to Italy at the end of the 5th century. Cultivation then spread through the Mediterranean, then on to California, where it is now commercially produced. The oil is pressed from the outer rind of the lemon and can take as many as 3000 lemons to product 1kg of oil. It is known to stimulate the white corpuscles that defend the body against infection. It can be used for external wounds to fight infection or internally, and has been known to be used by historical medical doctors to treat illness (tuberculosis, typhoid and malaria). It is a powerful bactericide and can also counteract acidity in the body, thus balancing the body’s PH. It is also astringent.
