The Terrible Ten: Toxic Ingredients You’ll Never Find in our Organic Haircare

The Terrible Ten: Ingredients which have been shown in wider use to cause problems such as allergies, hormone disruption, or harm to the development of unborn babies.

As part of the Soil Association’s Campaign For Clarity, Emeritus Professor Vyvyan Howard of the Centre for Molecular Bioscience at Ulster University did some in-depth research into 10 toxic ingredients that were found repeatedly in products wrongfully claiming to be natural and organic.

The shocking truth behind chemical ingredients such as these (now known as ‘The Terrible Ten’), is slowly but surely becoming more commonplace knowledge amongst consumers, which is great news when it comes to fighting for cleaner beauty products across the board.

With ingredients like these terrible ten showing up in more products than not, being used by men, women and children of all ages in most UK households, we agree with the Soil Association that it’s high time we all take it upon ourselves to spread awareness of the potential side affects and steer people towards a cleaner, safer beauty routine.

The Terrible Ten Beauty Ingredients

Listed below are The Terrible Ten ingredients that have been identified in the Soil Association’s research and the possible impact that these chemicals can have on human health and the environment:

[/spb_text_block] [spb_blank_spacer height=”30px” width=”1/1″ el_position=”first last”] [spb_toggle title=”Ethyl Hexylsalicylate” open=”false” width=”1/1″ el_position=”first last”]

Used as both a chemical UV filter in sunscreen and a fragrance ingredient to help the skin to readily absorb cosmetics, Ethyl Hexylsalicylate is a toxic ingredient that you’ll see a lot of on beauty product labels (and as the Soil Association have pointed out, even some apparently organic ones!).

With the potential to cause acute allergies and have a negative impact on the immune system as well as being considered harmful for the environment, this is not something any of us should be putting on our hair or skin.

[/spb_toggle] [spb_toggle title=”Homosalate” open=”false” width=”1/1″ el_position=”first last”]

Homosalate is an artificially produced chemical, again used as UV(B) protection and also as an aromatic skin conditioner.

As well as being shown to cause allergies, this has also been found to have a serious effect on hormone function, particularly in men. Especially horrifying is the discovery that this chemical has often been found in human breast milk and umbilical blood and has the potential to harm the development of babies.

[/spb_toggle] [spb_toggle title=”Imidazolidinyl Urea” open=”false” width=”1/1″ el_position=”first last”]

Another artificial chemical that has no place in an organic product, this is an ingredient that may release Formaldehyde – a class one carcinogen.

Used to help retain moisture in the upper layer of the skin and commonly found in deodorant, hand cream and shampoo (but not ours!), it may give a quick fix for dry hair and skin but this is superficial and far from truly nourishing.

[/spb_toggle] [spb_toggle title=”Octinoxate” open=”false” width=”1/1″ el_position=”first last”]

Developed for it’s capacity to block UVB rays, Octinoxate can be found in sunscreen and other products containing SPF.

This anti-microbial ingredient has been found to act as an efficient endocrine disruptor and also to affect the neurological development of babies. Just to make things even worse, this stuff bio-accumulates, meaning that once you use it on your skin, it sinks in and sticks around for a long time.

[/spb_toggle] [spb_toggle title=”Octocrylene” open=”false” width=”1/1″ el_position=”first last”]

Octocrylene is a UV absorber with the added edge of being a skin irritant, strong allergen and allergy causing when exposed to sunlight (which kind of defeats the point…)

This ingredient has been proven to be harmful without a shadow of a doubt, so much so, that this is one that may be phased out of the beauty industry in the coming years. Here’s hoping!

[/spb_toggle] [spb_toggle title=”PEGs: PEG-7; PEG-40; PEG-200; PEG-12″ open=”false” width=”1/1″ el_position=”first last”]

PEGs are derived from petrochemicals – do you need to know more?!

Multi-functional, used for their ‘moisturising’ properties, their ability to thicken products and also their laxative effect; you’ll find PEGs in many products from moisturiser to..well…laxatives. Commonly containing contaminants ethylene oxide and 1,4 dioxane, which both cause cancer, you’ll almost always find this in products feigning being natural by advertising their added natural ingredients.

[/spb_toggle] [spb_toggle title=”Polyquaternium 7″ open=”false” width=”1/1″ el_position=”first last”]

Unlike Tabitha James Kraan Organics products, in which we use the likes of coconut oil, aloe vera, oats and goji berries to re-build and repair the structure of your hair whilst offering a deep injection of moisture and nourishment for smooth, sleek results; others use Polyquaternium 7 – an artificial polymer used as an anti-static agent.

Potentially cancer causing and toxic to the environment, this is one to stay well away from.

[/spb_toggle] [spb_toggle title=”Polysorbate 20″ open=”false” width=”1/1″ el_position=”first last”]

How would you feel about washing your hair and skin with the same ingredient used in flea treatments? Doesn’t sound so great, does it? But the upsetting truth is that many shower gels, hand washes, bubble baths and shampoos contain just that.

For something that is used in such close proximity to your eyes, you may be dismayed to discover that Polysorbate 20 has been associated with serious eye irritation, not the mention many allergic skin reactions.

[/spb_toggle] [spb_toggle title=”Retinyl Palmitate” open=”false” width=”1/1″ el_position=”first last”]

Retinyl Palmitate is a sneaky one, as Retinyl is actually an anti-oxidant that is naturally produced in the human body, but Retinyl Palmitate is an artificial version that you may find added to beauty products.

Using products containing this ingredient with regularity could actually lead to a toxic level of vitamin A in the body, which has been shown to lead to developmental toxicity, or foetal malformations in babies in the womb.
